We Breath Racing

A little about the Alaskan breed

They are not your average puppy dog, the alaskan is as essential to the northern way of life as anything thing else. The alaskan was bred primarily for speed and performance. Even with all the modern conveniences, there is nothing better than a dog sled to get from here to there in Wintertime Alaska. The alaskan is the sled dog of choice for world-class dogsled racing sprint competition. None of the purebred northern breeds can match it for sheer racing speed. Demanding speed-racing events such as the Fairbanks, Alaska Open North American Championship and the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous are invariably won by teams of alaskan Huskies, or of alaskans crossed with hounds or gun dogs. Hounds are valued for their toughness and endurance. Winning speeds often average more than 19 miles per hour (31 km/h) over three days' racing at 20 to 30 miles (32 to 48 km) each day. On the rare occasion when purebred teams are entered in such races, they nearly always finish last.  Alaskan's are primarily bred as working dogs. They have greater endurance in sled racing than Siberian Huskies do. These dogs are gentle and playful, but willful and mischievous. This cheerful dog is very fond of his or her family. A puppy at heart, they are clever, sociable and loving, easy-going and docile. Though they do generally have a lot of energy, especially as puppies. Good with children and friendly with strangers, they are not watchdogs, for they bark little and love everyone. Alaskan's are very intelligent and trainable, but they have a mind of their own. Training takes patience, consistency and an understanding of the Arctic dog character. Once an alaskan knows something is wrong, they usually will not test the water again.  As far as breeding is concerned, they are still not technically viewed as a registered breed which is tragic. But given the blood lines, they will produce beautiful, playful puppy’s which will be easy to sell. Alaskan's do not have a bad reputation like a Pit Bull or a Doberman. They are just beautiful animals that people can recognize as loyal and loving.  Alaskan’s are an interesting breed. They love people, especially children. They are sensitive, loving animals. Every alaskan I have ever come in contact with has always been good around strangers, though usually way more attached to their owners.  They stand 28" to 30" at the shoulder and can weigh 60 lbs. or more. They have a deep chest, long legs and big thigh muscles. Like huskies, alaskans have a heavy undercoat that can be one color or multicolor. Their eyes are blue or brown, sometimes having one of each. They are very friendly and curious towards people and are known to bark very rarely; they usually howl or release a short "ohhh" sound.
